{"id":7941,"date":"2020-08-31T10:31:21","date_gmt":"2020-08-31T10:31:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.evelinecare.com\/eveline\/?p=7941"},"modified":"2022-03-14T09:38:03","modified_gmt":"2022-03-14T09:38:03","slug":"what-is-unexplained-infertility-and-can-you-still-get-pregnant-after-this-diagnosis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.evelinecare.com\/eveline\/blogs\/what-is-unexplained-infertility-and-can-you-still-get-pregnant-after-this-diagnosis\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Unexplained Infertility and Can You Still Get Pregnant After This Diagnosis?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In about a quarter of patients that are experiencing infertility, unexplained infertility is the cause, according to the\u00a0<i>European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology<\/i>\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eshre.eu\/Guidelines-and-Legal\/Guidelines\/Guidelines-in-development\/Unexplained-infertility\" aria-describedby=\"a11y-external-message\">ESHRE<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In this article, we\u2019ll look at what unexplained infertility actually is and what your chances of getting pregnant are when you get diagnosed with it. Also, we will briefly introduce\u00a0the available treatment options.<\/p>\n<p><b>What is Unexplained Infertility?<br \/>\n<\/b>Unexplained infertility can be diagnosed after other\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25112489\/\" aria-describedby=\"a11y-external-message\">causes of infertility<\/a>\u00a0have been excluded and after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30518485\/\" aria-describedby=\"a11y-external-message\">12 cycles<\/a>\u00a0of unprotected intercourse have not resulted in pregnancy in women younger than 35 years of age. In women older than 35, for whom the standard evaluations are normal, no pregnancy after six cycles of unprotected intercourse can be diagnosed with unexplained infertility<\/p>\n<p>However, if\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.asrm.org\/topics\/topics-index\/unexplained-infertility\/\" aria-describedby=\"a11y-external-message\">minor abnormalities<\/a>\u00a0are found, unexplained infertility may also be diagnosed as long as the abnormalities are not severe enough to cause infertility.<\/p>\n<p>To rule out any causes of infertility, tests are required.<\/p>\n<p><b>Which Tests Are Required Before a Diagnosis of Unexplained Infertility is Made?<br \/>\n<\/b>Various tests will need to be performed and evaluated before unexplained infertility can be diagnosed. This is to ensure that there isn\u2019t another reason for infertility that may need a different type of intervention.<\/p>\n<p>These tests include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Semen analysis<\/li>\n<li>Assessment of ovulation and the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle<\/li>\n<li>Assessment of tubal patency through hysterosalpingogram or laparoscopy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Semen analysis<br \/>\n<\/b>Also called a \u201csperm count test\u201d,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/semen-analysis\" aria-describedby=\"a11y-external-message\">this analysis<\/a>\u00a0examines the health and viability of a man\u2019s sperm.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/semen-analysis\" aria-describedby=\"a11y-external-message\">Three main factors<\/a>\u00a0are tested during the analysis:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the number of sperm in the sample (a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/infertility-and-reproduction\/guide\/what-is-semen-analysis#2\" aria-describedby=\"a11y-external-message\">normal count<\/a>\u00a0is 15 million sperm per millilitre),<\/li>\n<li>the shape of the sperm (making sure that the sperm cells are correctly formed), and<\/li>\n<li>sperm motility (the movement of the sperm).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The analysis is usually repeated 2 or 3 times to ensure that the results are as accurate as possible.<\/p>\n<p><b>Assessment of ovulation and the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle<br \/>\n<\/b>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4251280\/\" aria-describedby=\"a11y-external-message\">luteal phase of the menstrual cycle<\/a>\u00a0refers to \u201cthe period between ovulation and either the establishment of a pregnancy or the onset of menses 2 weeks later\u201d.\u00a0 This assessment will therefore assess whether or not ovulation is normal and whether or not the luteal phase progresses normally.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK539704\/\" aria-describedby=\"a11y-external-message\">corpus luteum<\/a>\u00a0plays a vital part in fertility during the luteal phase. The role of this temporary organ is to maintain the uterine environment after a mature egg is released. Should fertilisation not take place within 14 days after ovulation, menstruation will start and the corpus luteum will degenerate. A new corpus luteum is formed with each ovulation.<\/p>\n<p>The hormone that is primarily\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK539704\/\" aria-describedby=\"a11y-external-message\">produced by the corpus luteum<\/a>\u00a0is progesterone, although inhibin A and estradiol (a type of estrogen) are also produced. This plays a part in the decline in levels of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/evelinecare.com\/eveline\/blogs\/27-ttc-terms-you-should-know\">luteinizing hormone (LH)<\/a>\u00a0after ovulation. You can clearly see the LH surge (the time when you are most fertile) and decline after ovulation with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.evelinecare.com\/\" aria-describedby=\"a11y-external-message\">Eveline ovulation prediction kit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Assessment of tubal patency by hysterosalpingogram or laparoscopy<br \/>\n<\/b>The \u201cassessment of tubal patency\u201d tests whether or not the fallopian tubes are working normally. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiologyinfo.org\/en\/info.cfm?pg=hysterosalp\" aria-describedby=\"a11y-external-message\">hysterosalpingogram (HSG)<\/a>\u00a0evaluates the shape of the uterus as well as making sure that the fallopian tubes are open using an x-ray called a fluoroscopy and a contrast material.<\/p>\n<p><b>What Are My Chances of Getting Pregnant After a Diagnosis of Unexplained Infertility?<br \/>\n<\/b>Here we have some\u00a0<strong>good news<\/strong>\u00a0for you! Even after 12 months of unsuccessful attempts,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25112489\/\" aria-describedby=\"a11y-external-message\">50% of couples will conceive<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0in the following 12 months and another\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25112489\/\" aria-describedby=\"a11y-external-message\">12% in the year after<\/a>\u00a0<i>without\u00a0<\/i>further medical treatment (this is referred to as \u201cspontaneous conception). The rate of conception can reach some 80% in younger couples during the following 3 years of unprotected intercourse and without other medical intervention.<\/p>\n<p>There are, however, medical interventions available for unexplained infertility.<\/p>\n<p><b>Medical Treatments for Unexplained Infertility<br \/>\n<\/b>The options for medical treatment for couples or individuals with unexplained infertility include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Intrauterine insemination (IUI) with either clomiphene or letrozole as medication<\/li>\n<li>In-vitro fertilisation (IVF) for those couples who are unsuccessful in achieving a pregnancy with IUI.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Intrauterine insemination<br \/>\n<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/tests-procedures\/intrauterine-insemination\/about\/pac-20384722\" aria-describedby=\"a11y-external-message\">Intrauterine insemination<\/a>\u00a0is a type of artificial insemination. In this procedure, sperm that have been washed and concentrated are placed directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation. IVF has been shown to be the most effective form of assisted reproductive technology (ART) for unexplained infertility.<\/p>\n<p>IVF works as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mature eggs are collected from the ovaries,<\/li>\n<li>These eggs are then fertilised with sperm in a laboratory.<\/li>\n<li>The fertilised embryo (or embryos) are then transferred to the uterus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The IVF procedures can be completed in about three weeks. However, IVF procedures can also be split and done at different times, meaning the process could take longer.<\/p>\n<p>For the IVF procedures, a couple\u2019s own eggs sperm can be used or eggs, sperm, or embryos from known or anonymous donors.<\/p>\n<p><b>Summary<br \/>\n<\/b>As you can see from this article,\u00a0<strong>it is still possible to get pregnant<\/strong>\u00a0after being diagnosed with unexplained infertility \u2013 and the chances of doing so are quite high as well.
